Colorfastness to Crocking | AATCC Test Method 8

Alexandra Ledezma | San Francisco State University | ADM 365-01 | December 13,2016

Purpose: To determine the amount of color transferred, wet and dry, of a textile product to another surface.

Procedure: Using the crocking machine, we will rub a dry white 100% cotton square 10 times on the chosen fabric. Then repeat with a wet white 100% cotton square.

Rating of Change:

1.0= Significant change
2.0= Moderate change
3.0= Noticeable change
4.0= Slight change
5.0= No change or negligible change

Fabric Name: Herringbone
Fiber content:  100% linen
Stage of dyeing (if known): n/a

Printed (yes or no): No
Main colors: indigo

Sample of fabric tested

White fabric from dry crocking test Colorfastness rating: 4

White fabric from wet crocking test Colorfastness rating: 2/3

Conclusion: As seen in the results of the crocking test, linen is prone to crocking, especially when wet. This sample received a colorfastness rating of 4, a slight change, when dry and a rating of 2/3, noticeable/moderate change when wet. Linen is best used for in home textile products, such as, bed sheets, table cloths, and curtains. However, it is also used in apparel textile products, like dresses, blouses and skirts. If dyed, it is best not to used while wet, especially in clothing and towels.
